Choosing driver cameras for a fleet usually comes down to a handful of practical questions: how many channels do you need, what resolution actually matters, and do you need a simple dashcam or a full multi-channel DVR? Here's what's worth knowing before you buy and where to find the right kit for your fleet.

Start With How Many Angles You Actually Need

A single forward-facing camera covers the minimum most insurers expect and is enough for many light commercial vehicles. Larger vehicles and higher-risk routes benefit from additional coverage; a side camera to cover blind spots, a rear camera for reversing and following traffic, or a full multi-channel setup where every angle around the vehicle is recorded simultaneously. The more angles you record, the more complete your evidence is if a claim is ever disputed.

  • Single forward-facing: road-ahead coverage, lowest cost, suits smaller vehicles
  • Forward and driver-facing (dual): adds visibility of the cab, useful for coaching and fatigue monitoring

Dashcam or DVR: What's the Difference?

A dashcam is a self-contained unit: camera, recorder and storage in one housing, simple to fit and manage. A DVR (or MDVR for mobile multi-channel setups) separates the recording unit from the cameras themselves, letting you connect multiple camera feeds - forward, side, rear, interior - into a single central recorder. For single-vehicle or light-fleet use, a dashcam is usually the simpler and more cost-effective choice. For larger vehicles needing several angles of coverage, an MDVR system is built for exactly that.

Resolution and Storage: What Actually Matters

1080p is now the practical standard for both dashcams and DVR camera channels: enough detail to read number plates and establish fault clearly, without creating unnecessarily large file sizes. Storage capacity matters more than most buyers expect: higher-endurance microSD cards are built to handle the constant overwrite cycle of continuous recording, where standard consumer cards wear out much faster. If you're running a multi-channel system, factor in hard drive capacity too, since more camera feeds mean more footage to store.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • 4G connectivity, if you need remote footage retrieval without physically accessing the vehicle
  • ADAS (advanced driver assistance) features, if you want built-in hazard and lane-departure alerts as well as recording
  • Compatible high-endurance storage - a camera is only as reliable as the card or drive backing it
